The Women Movie, dinner - December 2008

What: Dinner at Osumo, Movie - The Women

Where: Canal Walk
When: 10 December 2008
Cost: Food & Movie plus/minus R80 - R90
Patrons Present: Nadine, Fiona, Carol, Vannessa and Lucy
Organised By: Carol
Firstly the Other Women (also 5 of us) met at Osumo’s for some healthy meal choices (my Salmon & Cottage Cheese Salad was scrumptious) and then we went to see the film, The Women.

Cast: Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Nadine, Fiona, Carol, Vannessa & Lucy
Debra Messing, Jada Pinkett Smith, Carrie Fisher,
Cloris Leachman, Debi Mazar, Bette Midler, Candice BergenDirector: Diane English
This film tells the story of Mary Haines (Meg Ryan), a clothing designer who seems to have it all – a beautiful country home, a rich financier husband, an adorable 11-year-old daughter and a part-time career creating designs for her father's venerable clothing company. Her best friend, Sylvie Fowler (Annette Bening), leads another enviable life – a happily single editor of a prominent fashion magazine, a possessor of a huge closet of designer clothes and a revered arbiter of taste and style poised on Manhattan’s cutting edge. But when Mary's husband enters into an affair with Crystal Allen (Eva Mendes), a sultry "spritzer girl" lurking behind the Saks 5th Ave perfume counter, she is devastated and is forced to re-evaluate her life. Mary and Sylvie's relationship is tested to breaking point while their tight-knit circle of friends, including mega-mommy Edie Cohen (Debra Messing) and author/lesbian Alex Fisher (Jada Pinkett-Smith), all start to question their own friendships and romantic relationships.
This film is ALL about the women and is man-free (finally a cinematic moment that centers on women and women only.) Oops sorry – there was a cameo role by a very, very small man at the end of the movie.
The performances of the all star cast were wonderful in this bitchy, funny and stylish comedy. Wooohooo to Jada Pinkett Smith who wins my tiny little Chocolate Lindt Reindeer (which I am very fond of) for her performance.
Debra Messing gets the Lindt Reindeer’s bell for being so glorious and so honest because that’s all we want after all – a little well-timed honesty, a little kindness and a lot of love.
I heard women giggle, chuckle, sigh heart wrenchingly and even snort in unison. I left the cinema with a huge grin on my face. Well worth the price of a ticket (a whopping R15 on Wednesdays).
Note: The Other Women have nominated Janine to be our baby-machine, Edie Cohen, in our tight-knit circle of friends….. (JB you have to see the movie to understand).

Hi there

Here are the KKC details. If I have your name down incorrectly, pls let me know. Carol, I can't seem to find your response.

Part 1 - Beach Walk (Kerry, Nads, Linda, Janine, Clarissa)
9.30am - Meet at second parking lot at Blouberg Beach , followed by breakfast at Doodles.

Part 2 (Lucy, Fiona, Vannessa, Janine, Clarissa)
12.30 - Meet at Fiona's (hope that's ok - you're the closest to Nicole). Perhaps we can just go in 1 car. Off to Nicoles (Natures Way Wellness, Monte Vista) for a glass of bubbly and some snacks whilst doing some early Christmas shopping. Then drive through to the art exhibition in Philadelphia where I'm told they'll give us more snacks and wine :-)
Great fun was had by all. New experiences had - Art Exhibition. The trick is to serve alcohol at the function and then no one notices if it is bad art, or how much money they are spending.

See you then!
Love, c xxx

Build-a-Bear - October 2008

What: Build-a-Bear
Where: Canal Walk
When: 29th October
Cost: Ranged from R99-R300
Patrons Present: Fiona, Charnel, Megan, Lucy, Carol, Nadine, and Janine (popped in for drinks)
Organised by: Nadine

On 29 October 2008, our group went to the Teddy Bear Workshop at Canal Walk to make our own special teddy bear friends. It's an ingenious concept. Firstly we chose a carcass. The prices of the carcasses range from R99 to R300 depending on the type of teddy you want. Then we moved on to the customised heart machine (your teddy bear needs a heart). You can choose either hearts that beat, to hearts that have special messages and even record a special message of your own. The hearts were put into the teddy beara and then we assisted with stuffing the teddy bear. Before the teddy bear was stitched up, we had to make a wish on a material heart and that was also put into our bears. Then we were off to groom and 'shower' our bears. Once that was done..it was time to choose the outfit. This is where the process got tricky. There were so many outfits and accessories to choose from. It was a difficult decision to make. Between the four of us we had a Viking, Superman, a hoody bear and Isabella (a girl bear with a black wig)...Once our bears were dressed, we named our bears and had birth certificates printed...Before we left with our new friends we took the teddy bear pledge to always love and care for them.... and I'm sure we will....

Share What You Don't Wear Party - Sept 2008

Where: Vannessa's house - Bloubergsands
When: 11 October
Cost: Plate of eats
Patrons present: Carol, Nadine, Vannessa, Clarissa, Lucy, Cindy, Janine, Muis

New initiative trend to hit the market. We all were getting bored of our old clothes and wanted a brand new look, new styles, and just to busy to go out shopping. The girls got together one Friday evening and brought all our old clothes, bags, shoes. Everyone went through each other's clothes and took what we liked. Good food, wine and conversation was had by all too. The leftover clothes we decided that we would donate this to a charity. A week after we had our little "clothes party" this article was found in the Essentials magazine : "Q Ever wondered what to do with your clothes you no longer wear? A: Throw a "Share What You Don't Wear' party! Invite the girls over, open a few bottles of wine, serve some snacks and enjoy rummaging through one another's 'this is o not me anyore!' apparel. What you no longer wear, your girlfriends might love and vice versa. Clothes with no home go to charity!
We donated the clothes to Home with patients with HIV. Here is feedback from them: "On behalf of Catholicare, I should like to thank you most sincerely for the clothing donated to the children and their parents affected with HIV/Aids. These will be taken out to the HOPE M'fuleni Clinic, you and your friends are welcome to visit the clinic at any time. Once again, many thanks for you donation.

Mamma Mia - August 2008

August KKC
What: Mamma Mia (the movie)
Where: Canal walk Cine 11
When:
2 September 2008 19:45
Cost: R29 (for the Movie)
Attendees: Linda, Nadine, Janine; Kerry, Sjianette (friend of Linda), Angela and Bonnie (friends of Kerry), Carol, Fiona and Carla Ann
Organised By: Linda

Most of us met up at House of coffees for a quick snack, coffee, chat…the usual when 8 – 10 women get together.
Then off to see the movie. I think I speak for all of us when I say it was brilliant. And here’s something amazing…Janine sat still, through the whole movie!
A few single Mexican waves came along when Colin Firth (HUNK) made his appearance on the screen. For anyone who is of the opinion that Pierce Brosnan can’t sing…well, who cares. At 60+ he looks darn good and he played James Bond…as Nadine said, “if Millie Vanillie could do it, why can’t he?”.
Ok, back to the movie. Daughter of single mom getting married, never knew her dad, but from her mom’s diary figures out it’s 1 of 3 possible men who her mom spent some idyllic Greek nights with. Send invite to all 3 and all 3 accept, neither knowing that there’s a possibility of being a dad. And so the fun begins. For the rest, go see the movie. Meryl Streep…awesome (looking for that dress she wore for the wedding, if anyone sees similar one!).
And of course…the songs by ABBA…everyone knows at least one or, like me, one line out of a variety of them. Bet ya you were all humming away the next day (to the frustration of your colleagues and/or partners, etc, hey).
And we even remembered to take a pic…yay!

Ladies Night - July 2008

KKC July 2008
What: Ladies Night
Where: Hemisphere (Absa building in Riebeeck street)
When: Ved 30 July 2008
Cost: R50 (+ drinks)
Attendees: Janine, Nadine, Vannessa
Organised By: Vannessa
Vawter Vednesdays Ladies Night @ Hemisphere
21:00 PM 16 July 2008 - 23:55 PM 16 July 2008
Wednesday Nights in the Mother City will never be the same, as NawtyMedia in association with Vawter bring you Vednesdays Ladies Nights.

Well, your traditional ladies nights out involves sexy (or not) males and copious amounts of alcohol with a fair amount of giggling and perving. Those evenings don't really happen so much anymore, not sure if we just don't get to hear about them since we don't move in that age group anymore!!! or if gals are just not into that kind of entertainment any more.
Every Wednesday night Hemisphere has a ladies night (though it does not appear to be restricted to ladies). The cost is R50 and for this you get a goodie bag and some delicious eats plus some pampering. Our goddie bags had a pair of sunglasses, g-string, lip gloss, eye make-up - powder and liner (though mine was pink - I can't imagine wearing pink on my eyes), a sample of body bronzer and a cloth for cleaning glasses. You can get in for free if you don't take the goodie bag. If you want the bag though you should book through Computicket or through Abby at Nawty Media - "Abby - NawtyMedia" . The snacks were quite good as well including a yummy chocolate fountain. The pamper sessions were done in the lounge area. The downside to this is that there was not much light there. But our manicurist did an amazing job considering the dim light. There was also a girl doing make-up and I must say I was very impressed. I have never liked having my make up done by supposed 'professionals' as they always overdo it and I end up looking like a panda! But I really liked what she did to my, and the other's, makeup. Even in the light of the bathrooms it looked good! I do not know if the pampering was done in the lounge because the VIP lounge was busy - the owner was having his birthday party in there - or if that is normal.
The music started off well but eventually turned into doef-doef music which caused us (plus Janine's headache) to leave before midnight. All in all, it was an enjoyable evening and the goodie bag is definitely worth the money. We are going to go again, maybe when it is a bit warmer when you don't have to lug a jacket along to prevent freezing when you leave. BUT we will be making more of an effort to get a bit dolled up as we did feel rather frumpy amongst those trendy young girls!! And remember they do have valet parking for about R20, so if you are comfortable letting them park your car you just pull up in front of the building and they will park the car safely.

Diva Day - June 2008

What: Kick Butt Diva Day
Where: Meerendal Wine Estate
When: Saturday 21st June 2008 : 8am-6pm
Cost:
Attendees: Nadine, Fiona, Carol, Lucy, Clarissa, Vannessa
Organised By: Fiona
On 21 June 2008, Lucy, Vannessa, Carol, Clarissa, Nadine and Fiona went on a "KICK BUTT" Diva day organised by Urban Mingle, at the Meerendal wine estate just outside Durbanville. For further details on Urban Mingle, go to: http://www.urbanmingle.co.za/

The program started off with some coffee and rusks, followed by a workshop on how to prevent an attack/rape. The two hour session involved some basic techniques of defense and with some (well, quite a bit) of participation from our side by practicing some of the "moves" on our friends! Very interesting, but for these "moves" to be of value, it is recommended that you go for further instruction/lessons. There were too many ladies present (18 in total) to have one-on-one sessions with the instructor. However, some of us, won't mention any names, did get to feel the instructor's six-pack:-) Oh sorry, what happened at the Diva Day, stays at the Diva day!

After the rape prevention workshop, we were introduced to some of Meerendal's wines, white and red and ended off with a rosé. Some of us thought that we could just drink before even being told about the wine, and had to ask for some more! OLIVER!!! Afterwards we had lunch and then off to some colour coding. Looking at the colours recommended for us, and what we actually wear, no wonder I often look dull! For future KKC ideas, contact Charmaine McCarthy at Skin on Plein (021) 979 3292/ 082 871 4478. They also present courses on how to apply your make-up for different functions (i.e. day, evening, wedding).

Two ladies from Triumph measured us to see if we are wearing the correct bra size (and some of us were quite surprised at what size they actually are!). My question still is, if you had no feet, would you wear shoes? So why wear a bra if you have no boobs??? We were also treated to a mini manicure during this session since we only sat around chatting when not being measured.

To end off the day we were introduced to some very kinky products...for the sweet spot. Since we tend to neglect the "sweet spot", a range of cleaning and freshening products were developed so that ladies could spend less time cleaning down there (by using nice little wipes) and pay more attention to our men. This could also be used on him, and a "great time" will be had by both for... well, lets leave it over to your imagination!!

And then it was time to go home, but being in such good spirits, we voted to end off our day (the KKC group of girls) with something to drink at Rhapsody's in Tyger Waterfront. And sadly, we had to end off our wonderful day of having "our" time, away from the husbands and kids, just to go back to "honey, where's my food...I'm hungry".

And just to add that there was a lucky ticket draw and Lucy was the lucky recipient of a meal for 2 at Meerendal. Thanks to Meerendal!
Lucy & Fiona also bought some Meerendal wine which is very highly recommended - Meerendal Pinotage 2003
